Assassination Attempt on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico
On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Slovakia Prime Minster Robert Fico (PM) was the target of an assassination attempt.
When I wrote this article on May 17, the PM was still in critical condition, and no clear political group or foreign entity claimed responsibility.
Slovakia’s political landscape is unique.
Prime Minister Robert Fico has navigated it with remarkable resilience over the last 30 years since the end of the United Nations of Czechoslovakia, which split into two countries after the end of the Cold War period from 1945 to 1989.
At least if you are from the West, that is how long the Cold War lasted.
If you are from Russia, it lasted from 1917, with the October Revolution and the communists seizing power, until the end of the Cold War in 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell, or 1991, when the USSR officially ended.
PM Fico embarked on his political journey during the Cold War era and witnessed the country’s transition to the present day as its Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Robert Fico has had a front-row seat as the rural-urban divide has unfolded and has even taken advantage of it throughout his career.
