During the cold War period India was very close to the Soviet Union and was the reason why the United States backed Pakistan

And India still very much distrust the West particularly the English speaking Nations for obvious reasons

Also India when it gained independence very much copied the Soviet Union attitude to the economy which damaged the Indian economy

People have to remember that during the first three decades of the cold War Nations either copied the USA or Russia
