European Union Sliding into the Far Right
In recent years, the European Union (EU) and its 27 member states have slowly slid into far-right politics, with an increase in nationalistic policies against deeper integration of the European Union into the equivalent of the United States but in Europe.
The reason for the slide to the right is due to the migration crisis, which has been ongoing since the 2010s and which the European Union and its member states have continually failed to resolve.
The far-right’s increasing influence is not limited to a few countries.
It’s a pan-European phenomenon with implications for the entire continent.
The unresolved economic issues stemming from the 2008 financial crash have further fuelled this fire, leading to a divide between economically advanced and struggling European nations.
This is the current situation in Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, and Croatia, where the far right is part of governing coalitions.
In Austria, the far right is leading polls ahead of national elections in September.
In Portugal and Slovakia, the far right significantly increased their vote share in recent national elections.
