Funny thing it was the Pope and the Roman Catholic church that went to great lengths to cripple the holy Roman Empire

Because the Pope was also a feudal prints with their own interests which conflicted with the holy Roman emperor

It's also why they destroyed the line of Frederick Barbarossa because they controlled Sicily, northern Italy and the German territories

That much power threatened and intimidated the Pope
