For today’s article, I will discuss why people have misunderstood Finland’s geopolitical positioning and international politics in the 20th century and early 21st century.

Finland has been mischaracterised due to ignorance as being viewed as a traitor to the Western liberal democracy due to the Fins kowtowing to Russian aggression in the 20th century and also due to Finland fighting with Nazi Germany during World War II.

This complex situation is often misrepresented in popular media due to news outlets and people’s preference for simple narratives.

The truth is that during Finland’s fight for survival against the Soviet Union from 1939 until peace was finally secured with the Soviet Union on September 19, 1944.

In the post-World War One period, Finland engaged in a program of national reunification, which was helped by its distinctive language, which was separate from the Indo-European languages that dominated the European continent.
