Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Over the West Bank

There is a brewing conflict within the West Bank over Jewish settlements settling lands that are internationally recognised and should belong to a Palestinian state.

The issue is highly complicated due to there being over 700,000 Israeli settlements in the West Bank, according to the United Nations Human Rights Office.

The peoples of Israel and the Palestinians have been in a state of conflict since the creation of Israel on May 18, 1948.

The origins of the conflict go back to the late 19th century and the promises the British made to the Israelis and Palestinians during World War One to create an independent Palestinian and Israeli state.

The British Empire did not fulfil its obligations due to its commitments to fighting World War I and the exhaustion of the Empire after World War II, which saw British power from 1919 to the end of World War II in 1945 on a trajectory of decline.

The Palestinian situation is made even more complicated with the Palestinians themselves being divided into two in regards to who governs Palestine.

Palestinian Controlled Territory

The recognised international government that rules over the Palestinians is the Palestinian Authority, which, on paper, controls the West Bank.
