Lithuania Prepares for War Against Russia
The independent nation-state of Lithuania, with a population of 2.6 million people as of 2024, is in a hopeless situation regarding its national defence against the Russian Federation.
As of February 2022, with the Russians directly invading Ukraine, Lithuania had no Tanks.
The Lithuanians ordered Leopard II tanks from Germany to correct the situation, but these are not expected to be in operation until 2030.
By that time, it could potentially be too late for Lithuania.
The Lithuanians want to avoid continuous Russian expansion in the West.
If the Russian Federation successfully conquers or partitions Ukraine, the Baltic states are the first states most likely to be targeted by Russia.
Lithuania also has a small Russian population, which could potentially be an internal insurgency that creates internal instability within Lithuania.
The Russian population makes up 5% of Lithuania’s population.
In practical terms, the number is 146,000 people within Lithuania who identify as Russian.
