Sweden in NATO: What Does That Mean

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has indicated that the Hungarian Parliament shall ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO before March 1, which means Sweden will soon be welcomed into the alliance as a full member.

NATO was first created in 1949 as a means for NATO nations to put all their collective national and industrial resources together to resist the military power of the Soviet Union/Russia, which controlled most of central and eastern Europe at that time.

Unlike other nations ' lacklustre contributions, Sweden will be a competent addition to NATO.

This is because, unlike other nations such as Poland, which is very vulnerable and has a strategic military deficit.

By this, I mean that Poland is very flat, and it is easy for tank divisions to manoeuvre inside the Polish territory.

In contrast, Sweden has geopolitical advantages of its geography due to its mountainous terrain, making it much harder to invade and to hold as a conquered territory.

Between Sweden’s military prowess and strategic position on the Baltic Sea, there’s potential for Sweden to have some immediate influence over NATO policies regarding Russia and the Baltic states.
