Terror Groups ISIS and ISIS Khorasan
With the Moscow terrorist attack taking place on 25 March 2024 and with the ISIS affiliate group ISIS-Khorasan claiming responsibility for that attack for today’s article, it might be worth investigating briefly who these terrorist groups are and what they are up to.
The people who are not familiar with ISIS grew into prominence during the Syrian civil war, which started in 2010 and is still an ongoing conflict.
In the mid-2010s, the ISIS terrorist organisation seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq.
Due to the re-emergence of Turkey as a serious international power and great power in the Middle East, the terrorist group ISIS has been hammered by the Turks and by the Russian Federation, who intervened militarily in 2015 to crush the ISIS organisation.
Also, the state of Iraq is re-emerging as a significant player within the region, which is driving the Islamic State out of that region of the Middle East.
The territories that ISIS has seized have never been a long-term viable political entity on their own.
Due to geopolitical limitations, the great powers within the region will reconquer ISIS-controlled territory in the fullness of time.
