The Ominous Chinese Listing Post in Cuba

The Chinese have been operating a listening post in Cuba since at least 2019. This post serves as a strategic location for China to gather intelligence and potentially influence regional geopolitical dynamics.

(Here is my behind the paywall link.)

According to International and Geopolitical Analyst Peter Zeilhan, Cuba is important because its location on the Strait of Florida, a key maritime route, could potentially be used to blockade US trade, significantly impacting the US economy.

This would only be effective if something happened to the Mississippi River, the other major trading route, and the United States port.

Cuba is too small, economically underdeveloped and militarily inept to be a severe threat to America.

This would only change if a great power, for example, the Soviet Union in 1962, tried to militarise Cuba in response to Americans placing nuclear weapons in the Republic of Turkey in 1959.

The militarization of Cuba by the Russians sparked the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, a tense standoff between the US and the Soviet Union that could have potentially sparked World War three.

This historical event serves as a cautionary tale for the potential threat the Chinese operating in Cuba could pose to the United States.
