Theory of Ego Depletion and the Loss of Emotional Control and Drive

Most people reading this article will have a normal job, and what I am about to write will resonate with you all to various degrees because when we are at work, we use our emotional control and drive to succeed.

I would argue, along with the theory of ego depletion, that the drive to do good and hard work over the day starts to deplete one’s abilities to be driven throughout the day and to use one’s good judgment; hence, people are frustrated and angry for no reason when they get home.

(Here is my behind the paywall link.)

Emotion of Peace

Furthermore, I would say this affects our abilities to spend time on passion projects, have a compelling personal relationship with our loved ones, and devote time to developing a practical marriage or sexual relationship with the ones we love.

The average couple only have sex 54 times per year, just over two days over 52 weeks in a year.

This happens because we are emotionally depleted and lack good judgment. By the time the work shift is over, we are emotionally wiped out, and then the same cycle starts all over again the following working day.

It’s a never-ending cycle that, over time, leads us to be husks and shadows of the people we used to be.
