Member European Union states have repeatedly lifted their tariffs on Ukrainian food exports over the past two years, making the European Union and China the chief buyers of Ukrainian foods.

India, the EU, and China were the three biggest importers of Ukrainian sunflower oil.

The second largest Ukrainian food export is corn.

In 2021/22, this totalled 23,000,000 metric tons, making it the world’s fourth-largest grain exporter.

The largest markets for Ukrainian corn were China, the EU, Turkey and Iran.

This also raises the possibility of China’s influence in the Ukrainian conflict and Chinese pressure on the Russians to make a peace deal.

The Chinese heavily depend on international shipping and globalisation to feed their population of around 1 billion.

Grain

In the trade year 2022/2023, Ukraine was the sixth-largest wheat-exporting region.

Around five per cent of total wheat exports came from Ukraine in that period.

Furthermore, the country accounted for nearly 40 per cent of global sunflower meal exports and 35 per cent of sunflower oil.
