Why People from Non-affluent Families Struggle in Higher Education

For people who have attended university or know other people or people in the University environment, particularly within university cities, it is no surprise that people from less affluent backgrounds struggle in higher education.

The disparity in educational opportunities between affluent and non-affluent families is a key factor.

This is influenced by social, cultural, and mindset factors and the perceived value of education within these communities.

Suppose somebody from a family enjoys pursuing higher learning and has experienced the benefits of a robust education.

In that case, the attitude and the joys of learning will be passed on to their children.

For others like myself from a poor ex-coalmining community in northern England, pursuing education and academic pursuits is often seen as a waste of time when living in areas without economic opportunities for people’s higher education.

Often, opportunity is condensed in cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, New York, Los Angeles, and other large cities with thriving economies that provide opportunities for people who can afford to live in cities.
